Our History: Six Generations of Service

George J. Roll & Sons has a long and storied
history in Blue Island, Illinois. In the 1870's the Roll family
conducted business as "Calumet Ice", an operation that utilized barges to
transport large blocks of ice cut from local rivers into the City of
Chicago. Our namesake, George J. Roll, began selling ice retail in 1888.
From that time until the 1950's the primary goods for sale by the company
were coal and ice. |

|
In the 1950's as demand for coal and ice
dropped off, the company diversified into other products such as
insulated sheathing (fuzzboard), plaster, plywood and other building
products. In 1960, the first boxcar of wallboard was received and the
diversification continued.
For the last 50 years our main focus has been quality building materials and
outstanding delivery service.
